A Jackson Hole winter diary

The winter I found out it wasn't the weather.

Every cold season I'd go quiet and small. It took me until last winter to see where it actually started.

First hard frost. I pulled the winter things down from the top of the closet, and every single one made me feel older and wider than I am. Bulky, scratchy, shapeless. I put the grey one back on and skipped book club. Told myself I was tired.

Three weeks of reaching for the same heavy layers. I caught myself in the hall mirror on the way past — hunched, cold, swallowed up in wool — and for a second I didn't recognise the woman looking back. Told Ray I didn't think I'd go to the Hendersons' this year.

"It's the short days," everyone says. And maybe some of it is. But I've started to notice it doesn't begin at the window. It begins at the closet, every single morning.

I dread getting dressed in winter. And a woman who dreads getting dressed doesn't feel much like going anywhere.

December 10, 2025 — the morning it turned

Walked past a little boutique on the Town Square — Nancy Susan Moulton — and stopped so suddenly the man behind me nearly walked into me. A soft blue knit in the window — proper cables and diamonds, knitted right in, not printed on. The card said warm without the bulk. I didn't believe a word of it. I bought it anyway.

The one in the window. Knitted in, not printed on.

Wore it into town. Warm the whole way to the truck and back — and here's the part I keep turning over — not swamped. It sits close without clinging. I stood up straight for the first time in weeks. A woman at the market asked where it was from before I'd finished paying.

December 20, 2025

Ray looked up from his chair tonight and said, "You seem a lot more yourself lately." Forty-one years, and he noticed. I hadn't said a word to him about any of it.

He had no idea it started with being warm.

This week — a year on

That little boutique was Nancy Susan Moulton, on the Town Square in Jackson. I went back. The sweater I chose that December — the one that finally suited me and was genuinely warm — I've worn all year, and I never did feel small in the cold again.

Now the first snow is back, and so is their five-year anniversary sale: 60% off the whole collection. This time I'm not waiting until I feel invisible. I'm going straight back for more of it before the sizes go.

What was actually wrong

I'd decided, without ever quite saying it out loud, that in winter you get two choices: be warm, or feel like yourself. Not both. So I chose warm every year, and paid for it in confidence.

That was never true. It was just the clothes they make for women our age — bulky, shapeless, and somehow still cold. What actually keeps you warm is a good, dense knit with real texture to it. What makes you feel like yourself is a shape that follows you and a collar that says you made an effort. Nobody had bothered to put the two in one sweater.

Why this one is different

Rich cable-and-diamond texture — knitted in, not printed on

Warm without the bulk — holds the heat, skips the padding

Sits close without clinging, long enough at the hip

Collar and short button placket keep the wind off your neck

About the price

I'll be straightforward, because it was the part that made me suspicious. It's $44.95. It was $112.50. I've paid far more than that for bulky things that made me feel worse. There's no catch I've found — a small boutique selling directly, running their five-year anniversary sale at 60% off, the biggest they've ever done. One review said it was the first winter in years she hadn't "disappeared until spring." That was the one that decided it for me.

It wasn't the winter after all. It was what I'd been wearing through it.
