A letter from a customer

The ugliest thing in my house was the laundry basket. My daughter-in-law said it out loud so I didn't have to.

I keep a tidy house. Forty-one years of practice. The good tablecloth, the plants watered, the photos straight on the wall.

And then, in the corner of the laundry room, a cracked beige plastic basket with one handle snapped off, that I'd been meaning to replace since roughly the Clinton administration.

I'd stopped seeing it, the way you stop seeing anything you've looked at for twenty years. Until my daughter-in-law came to help me fold sheets, picked it up, watched the broken handle give way, and said it.

"Diane — this basket has been through a war."

She wasn't wrong. We laughed. But it stuck with me, because she'd said out loud the thing I'd quietly known and chosen to ignore: every other corner of my home I'd made nice, and this one I'd just given up on.

the replacement. it stands up on its own and it looks like my gus.

Why is everything for the dull jobs so ugly?

Here's what I'd never stopped to think about. We're allowed to make the living room beautiful. The kitchen, the bedroom, the porch. But the minute it's a chore — the laundry, the mudroom, the dog's corner — the only things they sell you are cracked plastic and wire.

As if the rooms where you actually do the work don't deserve anything nice. I'd believed that without ever noticing I believed it.

Then I found this one

It's from Nancy Susan Moulton, the little boutique on the Town Square in Jackson. A tall, soft laundry basket, hand-quilted all over in warm patchwork — golds, olive greens, deep rust — with a big golden retriever stitched across the front, looking right at you with his tongue out.

It looks exactly like my Gus. I ordered it on the spot, mostly because of the face.

Stitched, not printed. You can run your hand over every seam.

What I didn't expect was how well made it is. It's properly quilted — stitched, not a flat picture printed on — with a firm padded body that stands up on its own instead of flopping over when it's half empty. A cotton lining, and two sturdy canvas handles that carry a full load of towels up the stairs without digging into your hands.

What actually happened next

It now sits in the laundry room where the sad plastic one used to be, and I'll be honest with you — it's the prettiest thing in there by a mile.

My grandson says good morning to the dog on it. My daughter-in-law, the one who started all this, asked where I'd got it before she'd even taken her coat off. And twice now I've used it to carry blankets out to the porch purely because I like looking at it.

It's a laundry basket. I did not expect to be fond of a laundry basket.

About the price

I want to be straightforward, because it was the part that made me suspicious.

It's $49.95. It was $125.00.

My first thought was that there had to be a catch, because I've paid nearly that for plain plastic hampers that cracked inside a year. There's no catch I've found — they're a small boutique selling directly, running their five-year anniversary sale at 60% off, the biggest they've ever done.

I read the reviews first. Four hundred-odd of them, at 4.4 stars. One woman keeps hers in the living room for throw blankets and said nobody has ever guessed it's a laundry basket. I ordered a second one for exactly that.

What I'd tell you if we were friends

If there's a corner of your house you've quietly given up on — the one with the ugly plastic thing you've stopped seeing — it's worth ten minutes to go and look.

Not because a basket will change your life. But it turns out the dull little jobs feel a bit less dull when the thing you reach for isn't an eyesore. Who knew.

Two practical things: the sale is on now, and the dog designs go first. Mine's the golden, but they do others.
