A NOTE FROM NANCY, ON THE ONE PIECE I WOULD LAYER FIRST THIS WINTER
A letter from the founder
Five Winters On The Town Square. This Is The Piece I Would Put In Your Hands First.
If you are only going to add one thing to your closet before the snow sets in, I would make it something you can wear three ways in one day. And I will tell you exactly why.
Nancy Owner of Nancy Susan Moulton, Jackson Hole October 2026 6 min read
I opened Nancy Susan Moulton five years ago, in a little shop just off the Town Square, after years of teaching skiing on the mountain. I had one rule then, and it has not changed since: if it does not work on the fortieth cold morning, it does not go on the rail.
It is late October, and the first snow has already come and gone twice. The mornings are nineteen degrees, the afternoons are fifty, and by four o’clock the sun drops behind the Tetons and it is cold again.
On the mountain, the first thing I taught every new skier was layers. You never wear one big thing. You wear three thinner ones, and you take one off when the sun comes out. Winter in town is exactly the same, and most of what women our age are sold for winter forgets it. A heavy sweater you are stuck in all day. A thin blouse that is useless the minute you step outside.
This is the piece that sits in between. A blouse at the kitchen table, a light jacket over a turtleneck on the Square, and the prettiest thing you will own all winter. There are six things I would tell you about it, in the order I would point them out.
1
It is a blouse and a jacket
Button it up and wear it on its own indoors. Leave it open over a turtleneck or a fine knit and it becomes a light jacket for the walk to the post office. On the coldest days it goes under your coat, and when you take the coat off at lunch, you are still dressed. One piece, three layers.

“It has not made it back to the closet once since it arrived. It lives on the hook by the back door.”

The daisies are raised, not printed
Run your thumb across the front and you can feel every flower. The daisies are stitched on in raised cording, petals and curling stems, cream on cream, across the front, the back and down both sleeves. From across the room it reads as texture. Up close it is the detail women stop you to ask about.

“I shove the sleeves up to do the dishes every single evening and the cuffs still sit flat. That is unheard of.”

3
A ruffle that knows when to stop
There is a soft ruffle along the buttons, at both cuffs, and around the hem. Enough to make it feel special, not so much that you feel like you are wearing a costume. It is the difference between a plain white shirt and something you chose on purpose.

“Warm without being stifling. I wore it indoors all day and never once had to take it off because I was too hot.”

A curved hem, so you never tuck
The front of the hem curves away on both sides, so it sits neatly over jeans or cords and finishes at the hip. Nothing to tuck in, nothing riding up when you reach for the top shelf, nothing bunching under your coat.

“Two winters in and every button is exactly where it started. I have not needed the spare.”

Cream, in a season of black and navy
From October to April this town wears black parkas, navy fleece and gray everything. Cream is the color that brings light back to your face in the middle of all that. It goes with brown boots, olive cords, faded denim and every dark coat you already own.

“No stretched-out shoulders, no droop at the hem. It looks the same in March as it did in October.”

A proper collar and buttons all the way up
A real shirt collar that frames your face and sits neatly over a sweater neckline. A row of dark buttons all the way down the front, so you can wear it closed to the top on a cold morning or open to the third button by the fire.

“I ordered the 4XL expecting the usual sack. It is cut like the small one, just bigger. I ordered a second.”

Our blouse, against the ones you have been buying
You can find a white blouse almost anywhere, and most women I know have three of them in a drawer. Here is the difference, laid out plainly.
Most $60 WHITE JACKETS
Too thin to wear outside after October
A print that sits on top of the fabric
Plain, so you disappear in it
A straight hem you have to tuck
Bright white that shows every coffee drip
Stops at XL, then an apology
Nancy Susan Moulton
A blouse indoors, a light jacket outdoors
Raised cord daisies you can feel
Ruffles at the buttons, cuffs and hem
A curved hem that sits over jeans
A soft cream that goes with winter darks
Thirty-seven patterns, S through 5XL
On the mountain you never wear one big thing. You wear three, and you take one off when the sun comes out. This is the one I would layer first.
Why the jackets are 60% OFF this month
This month Nancy Susan Moulton turns five. Same little shop, same wood stove in the corner, same Town Square.
Five years ago this was a girl who loved the snow and couldn’t make a living from it, an empty room, and my parents believing in me when the idea still felt too big to say out loud. Today it is my full-time life. So to say thank you, everything in the shop is on sale for our anniversary.
I want to be clear about what this is. It is not a closing-down sale. I am not going anywhere. It is a thank-you to the women who came in out of the cold and kept coming back. When the anniversary ends, this goes back to $137.50.

“Two jackets on my porch in three days, wrapped in tissue with a note written by hand. I have never had a parcel from anywhere arrive looking like that.”

The reviews say the same things I do, over and over. 4.8 stars across more than 1,500 women. If you are going to add one warm thing to your closet before the clocks change, this is where I would start — while the sizes are still there.

Nancy taught skiing on the mountain for years before opening Nancy Susan Moulton just off the Town Square in 2021, with her parents’ help and a wood stove in the corner. Half the town still comes in to warm up before they shop. You do not have to live in Wyoming to come in out of the cold.
