A note from NANCY, on the one warm thing I would not be without in October
A letter from the OWNER
Five Winters On The Town Square. This Is The Bag I Would Hand You First.
If you are only going to add one thing to your closet before the snow sets in, I would make it a bag that leaves both of your hands free. And I will tell you exactly why.
Nancy · Owner of Nancy & Susan · Jackson Hole, Wyoming · October 2026 · 5 min read
I opened Nancy & Susan five years ago, in a little shop just off the Town Square, after years of teaching skiing on the mountain. I had one rule then, and it has not changed since: if it does not work on the fortieth cold morning, it does not go on the rail.
It is October, and the first snow has already come through. Here, and in Montana and Colorado and every town where the sidewalks turn to glass by Thanksgiving. The first icy morning always arrives a few weeks before anyone is ready for it.
And here is the thing about winter in a mountain town. You need both hands. One for the railing on the post office steps. One for your coffee. One for your granddaughter’s mitten, which she has just taken off again. That is already three, and you only have two.
On the mountain, the first thing I taught every new skier was this: never carry anything in your hands. Winter in town is no different. A handbag is something you hold. A crossbody is something you forget you are wearing.
That is why, of everything in the shop, this bag is the one I would put on your shoulder first. There are six things I would tell you about it, in the order I would point them out.
1
BOTH HANDS FREE, ALL WINTER
The strap goes across your body, over your coat, and the bag sits at your hip where you can reach it without looking. Your hands are for the railing, the car door and the dog leash. Not for a purse you are afraid of dropping in the slush.

“It has not made it back to the closet once since it arrived. It lives on the hook by the back door.”

A STRAP WIDE ENOUGH TO FORGET ABOUT
The first thing that goes wrong with most bags is never the bag. It is the strap, a thin little thing that digs into your shoulder by noon and cuts into your neck when you wear it across. Ours is wide, so the weight spreads out instead of pressing into one line. You feel it less over a sweater than most straps feel over a coat.

“Wide enough that it sits flat on your shoulder instead of cutting in. Teal and gold, so it is the first thing people notice.”

IT ADJUSTS OVER A WINTER COAT
A strap that fits over a sweater in September is too short over a parka in January. The gold buckle slides, so you can shorten it to wear on the shoulder in the shop and let it out to wear across your body over your heaviest coat. One bag, every layer.

IT HOLDS A WHOLE WINTER DAY
The bucket shape opens wide at the top, so you can see everything without digging. Wallet, gloves, a folded scarf, reading glasses, phone, keys. It is roomy enough for a full day out and soft enough that it does not stick out like a briefcase.

“Wallet, scarf, keys and phone. It opens wide enough that nothing hides at the bottom.”

GOLD CLASPS THAT CLIP ON AND OFF
The strap is attached with gold swivel clasps, so it turns with you instead of twisting. Unclip it and you can loop it over the back of a chair at dinner or a hook by the door, and the bag hangs straight instead of ending up on a wet floor.

THE STRAP IS WHAT MAKES IT
The bag itself is a warm tan that goes with everything you own, jeans, a wool coat, a fleece. The strap is what makes it yours. Teal and gold, with a pattern that catches the light. I have watched women stop each other on the Square to ask about it, which, in a town where everyone wears black parkas from November to April, is saying something.

Our bag, against the ones you have been buying
You can find a handbag for fifty dollars almost anywhere, and most women I know have three of them in the closet. I have carried a great many myself, on icy sidewalks and up the stairs of the ski lodge. Here is the difference, laid out plainly.
MOST HANDBAGS
Carried in your hand or on your elbow
A thin strap that digs in by noon
One length that never fits over a coat
Zipped pockets you dig through in gloves
A strap that twists and kinks
Black or beige, gone in the crowd
NANCY SUSAN MOULTON
Across your body, both hands free
A wide strap that spreads the weight
A buckle that adjusts over any layer
A bucket that opens wide
Gold swivel clasps that turn with you
A strap people stop you to ask about
On the mountain, you never carry anything in your hands. Winter in town is no different. That is the whole reason this is the bag I would give you first.
Why everything is 60% off this month
This month Nancy & Susan turns five. Same little shop, same wood stove in the corner, same Town Square.
Five years ago this was a girl who loved the snow and couldn’t make a living from it, a stove in an empty room, and my parents believing in me when the idea still felt too big to say out loud. Today it is my full-time life. So to say thank you, I did something I have never done: everything in the shop is 60% off for our anniversary.
I want to be clear about what this is. It is not a closing-down sale. I am not going anywhere. It is a real thank-you to the women who came in out of the cold and kept coming back. When the anniversary ends, the bag goes back to $112.50.

The reviews say the same things I do, over and over. 4.8 stars across more than 1,500 women. If you are going to add one warm thing to your closet before the clocks change, this is where I would start — while the sizes are still there.

Nancy taught skiing on the mountain for years before opening Nancy & Susan just off the Town Square in 2021, with her parents’ help and a wood stove in the corner. Half the town still comes in to warm up before they shop. You do not have to live in Wyoming to come in out of the cold.
