A note from NANCY, on the one warm thing I would not be without in October

A letter from the founder

Five Years of Making Things by Hand. The Blouse Is the One I'd Give You First.

A whole rail of them, all cut and sewn to the same rules. If you're only going to add one piece to your closet this season, I'd make it a blouse — and I'll tell you exactly why.

Nancy Owner of Nancy Susan Moulton Jackson Hole, Wyoming 5 min read

I grew up here in Jackson Hole, under the Tetons, where the cold comes early and takes its time leaving. I started out teaching people to ski — it was my whole heart — but a love like that doesn't always pay the rent. With my parents believing in me, I opened a little boutique of my own instead. Five years ago this month.

I've made every piece in it with my own two hands since. And here is the thing about a blouse. It is the piece that does the most and asks the least — layered under a sweater when the morning bites, worn on its own when the afternoon turns soft, sleeves rolled for dinner. One piece, a dozen ways.

That is why, of everything on the rail, the blouse is the one I'd put in your hands first. There are six things I'd tell you about mine, in the order I'd point them out.

1

It goes with everything you already own

Jeans at the market, trousers to lunch, tucked or loose, layered or bare. A blouse is the piece you reach for without thinking, because it works with the whole closet instead of one outfit.

"I've worn it three ways in a week, and it's only been here a week."

2

Collars and cuffs that are properly finished

The collar holds its shape, the placket lies flat, the cuffs sit clean at the wrist — because I set every one by hand. It matters more on a blouse than on anything else, because a blouse gets pushed up your forearms twenty times a day.

★★★★★

"I shove the sleeves up to do the dishes every evening and the cuffs still sit flat. Unheard of."

3

Real fabric that breathes

A soft, natural-fibre weave, dense enough to hold its shape and open enough to move air. Thin synthetics feel fine in a heated shop and turn clammy on the walk to the car, because they have nowhere to put the moisture. A good weave moves it. That is the whole trick.

EM

★★★★★

"Comfortable all day. Never clammy, never too warm indoors."

4

Buttons that do not give up

The first thing to fail on a cheap blouse is never the fabric. It is a button. Mine are sewn with a shank so the buttonhole has somewhere to sit, and there is a spare stitched inside the hem.

★★★★★

"Two years in and every button is exactly where it started. I haven't needed the spare."

5

It keeps its shape, wash after wash

A blouse earns its keep by looking the same in March as it did in October. A proper set shoulder and a hem that holds are what stop the sag and the twist that cheap ones pick up after one wash.

DS

★★★★★

"No stretched-out shape, no droop. It looks the same now as the day it arrived."

Many patterns, S through 5XL, one price

Not one blouse in seven colours. A whole rail of patterns, each cut and finished the same way, and graded properly for every size so the fit lands where it should. Nothing costs more at 3XL than it does at Small.

RG

★★★★★

"I ordered the 4XL expecting the usual sack. It is cut like the small one, just bigger. I ordered a second."

My blouses, against the ones you've been buying

Most $75 blouses

Thin synthetic, sold to you as something better

A button pulls loose by winter

Collar twists and won't lie flat

Gapes at the bust by the second button

Pills after one wash

Stops at XL, then an apology

Nancy Susan Moulton

Soft, breathable natural-fibre weave

Hand-set buttons with a shank, plus a spare

A collar and cuffs that hold their shape

Real room through the bust and shoulder

Softens instead of pilling

A rail of patterns, S through 5XL

A blouse is the one piece you can wear a dozen ways. That's the whole reason it's the one I'd give you first.

Why the blouses are up to 60% off

Five years — just this month

This month Nancy Susan Moulton turns five. Same street in Jackson Hole, same two hands, same table in the back where I still wrap every order myself.

To mark it I did something I've never done: the whole blouse rail, on one anniversary run, at close to what it costs me to make. One run. Not a season, not a rolling sale.

When a pattern sells out of your size, that's the end of that one. The blouses go back to $100.00, and the anniversary doesn't come round again.

5-Year Anniversary Run · This month only

Stacked discounts apply automatically at checkout and can be combined across collections. At four cardigans that is $46.40 each. We make almost nothing at that price, and that is on purpose.

The reviews say the same things I do, over and over. 4.8 stars across more than 1,500 women. If you're going to add one piece to your closet this season, this is where I'd start — while the sizes are still there.
